What does the double arrow mean in roulette?
Andrew A asked:
There’s a double ended arrow between the 0 and the 00 in the board depiction. What does this mean, and what are the odds?
Answer
The double-ended arrow between the 0 and 00 on the American roulette table layout represents the option to place a bet on both 0 and 00 simultaneously. This is known as a “split bet” in roulette. By placing a chip on the double-ended arrow, you’re betting that either the 0 or the 00 will come up on the next spin.
The odds of winning a split bet on the 0 and 00 in American roulette are 2 out of 38 (since there are 38 pockets on the wheel, including 0, 00, and numbers 1-36). This translates to a probability of approximately 5.26%. The payout for winning a split bet is 17 to 1, meaning if you bet $1 on the split and win, you would receive $17 in winnings plus your original $1 bet, for a total of $18.
Thats for when you play the line, the numbers in between those points. Its payoff is 17-1
that spot is not on a casino roulette board. That is just a graphic for Wikipedia. I does mean a split however for both 0 and 00.
It means that you can split the two numbers (which pays 17 to 1). The arrows on that model aren’t really there on a roulette table, but are shown in the model to show street (ie. one of the lines of 3 numbers) and column (one of the three rows of 12 numbers) bets. The 0 and 00 dont fit into the 12 by 3 grid with the other numbers, so they are in a line of 2 numbers instead of 3 numbers. Since there is no 3rd number in that row, you cannot place a street bet (covering all 3 numbers in the row), but are left betting on only two numbers, which makes it a split bet instead of a street bet. The drawing is just illustrating that you can split the numbers 0 and 00.
